Opening day of horse racing season is Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Join SDAA at the intersection of Via de la Valle and Jimmy Durante Drive, just west of Interstate 5. We will assemble under the big electronic sign at 12:00 noon to protest the abuses of the racing industry. SDAA will provide signs and banners. We will return on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at noon to protest "Family Fun Day" at the track. (Nothing says "family fun" like drugs, gambling, and injured or dead horses!) SDAA has repeatedly petitioned the California Horse Racing Board to raise the minimum age for horses to compete, as it is well-recognized that many "breakdowns" are due to the incomplete development of the bones in very young horses. Nevertheless, younger horses are faster, and speed trumps safety in the ugly world of gambling on race horses. They continue to run too young, too hard, and too long. And the tragic fact is that most retired racers wind up at the slaughterhouse.
